| Understanding electric propulsion: Aerospace researcher shares expert knowledge with NASA | 
For Dr. Kristina Lemmer, associate professor and aerospace researcher at Western Michigan University, working in STEM means figuring out electric propulsion for rockets, Hall thrusters and cube satellites—and sharing expert knowledge with students and the aerospace engineering community, including NASA. Lemmer leads important research in plasma engineering with a focus on space electric propulsion—a highly specialized scientific arena—and leads the research and education efforts of the WMU Aerospace Laboratory for Plasma Experiments (ALPE). With funding in excess of $4.5 million, the lab conducts research, testing and modeling for electric propulsion under Lemmer’s expert supervision.

| Advance Peace Lansing | One of the charities AST supports was recently featured in our local newspaper. Congratulations!!
Advance Peace Initiative was recently featured in an opinion piece in the Lansing State Journal. The op-ed was titled “Viewpoint: Early results show investment in community violence intervention working in Lansing.” The op-ed discusses the state of gun violence prior to Advance Peace’s formation in 2022, and the current statistics on the impacts of Advance Peace’s work. The author of the article, Julie Krupa, Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Criminal Justice at MSU, commends the work Advance Peace has done thus far, and shares her opinion that Advance Peace has shown early positive results in the mediation of gun violence.
“In the first 18 months, shooting fatalities in that sector fell by 20% (from 5 to 4) and non-fatal shootings declined by 25% (from 35 to 26) compared to the previous 18 months,” Krupa shared. “Citywide, the number of homicides declined by 59% and non-fatal shootings by 14%.” Learn more here |

| Sharing Space | I just finished reading this great book by Astronaut, Chemist, and Mom, Cady Coleman. It was really interesting reading about her experience as a NASA astronaut being a woman and a mom. She also talks about the need for diversity and how that diversity can bring valuable perspectives and insights to a team.
In 2010, Cady Coleman boarded a rocket and blasted off into space for her third NASA mission, a six-month expedition to the International Space Station where she was the only woman on her six-person crew. After years spent overcoming obstacles in competitive, high-performance environments, including grappling with her own doubts and training in a spacesuit that was too big, Coleman became a success story in a role that wasn’t built with her in mind—an astronaut who is also a mother, Air Force colonel, scientist, and leader. Her determination and amazing experiences give her a unique perspective on how to set yourself up for success, in space and here on Earth.
