Water Discharge Monitor using LabVIEW and CompactDAQ
Overview
Water Discharge Monitor using LabVIEW and CompactDAQ. A university was doing research on comparing 2 solar systems to heat water for use in dairy farms. Flow and temperature of both systems needed to be monitored. The system needed to control a solenoid valve based on flow measurement that controlled water discharge. The solar systems were in different locations and needed to be monitored remotely. Data needed to be saved to be analyzed at a later time.
Solution
We developed custom LabVIEW software that used ethernet based CompactDAQ hardware. CompactDAQ is a data acquisition platform that includes a chassis with signal conditioning modules to connect to measurement signals. An ethernet CompactDAQ chassis was chosen so the data acquisition hardware and PC could be in different locations.

Features
Main
The main screen had indicators that displayed the current values of measured temperature and flow. The software compared the flow from the 2 different solar systems and controlled a solenoid value to maintain flow between the 2 systems.
Setup
The setup screen allowed the user to set up hardware channels and test configuration.

Data
The data acquired from the software was saved a comma separated value file (.csv). CSV files are human readable and can be read by any analysis software including excel.

Result
The Water Discharge Monitor using LabVIEW and CompactDAQ allowed the customer to monitor and record data from the two different solar systems. The ethernet based CompactDAQ chassis enabled the customer to monitor the solar systems from different locations. The software was easy and intuitive to use and the data gathered was invaluable to determine the feasibility of the two systems.
