Motor Spacer Calibration for a Medical device using LabVIEW

Spacer Selector Main FP

Overview

Motor Spacer Calibration for a Medical device using LabVIEW.  A medical device manufacture needed custom software to automate calibrating a spacer for their product.  The software needed to monitor a force gauge and control a linear motor.  The software needed to automatically calculate the recommended spacer based on the the test results.  Previously the customer had no way to determine the correct spacer size.

Solution

We developed a custom LabVIEW application the communicated to a SHINPO force gauge and a Sigma Koki Motor Drive via RS232.  RS232 is a serial data transmission protocol used in many devices.  Using serial or RS232 a PC or other controller can read and control a stand alone instrument.  LabVIEW was an ideal choice because there were available drivers for the force gauge and motor drive.

Features

The software commanded to move the motor to several set positions and read the force.  This data was then used to calculate the correct spacer needed for the product.  A printed report was created and data from the test was saved to an excel file to be analyzed by the engineering team.

We developed a setup screen to allow the user to enter test settings.  The settings were saved to file so the user didn't have to reenter settings after closing the software.

Result

Motor Spacer Calibration for a Medical device using LabVIEW allowed the customer to automatically calibrate the spacer needed for their product.  Previously the customer had no way determining the correct spacer to use.  Using the software AST developed, the customer was able to easily determine the correct spacer to use and generate the required documentation.  This greatly improved the speed and quality of their manufacturing process.
